HOW SCOOTING CAN HELP TOWARDS CLEAN AIR FOR ALL

The governments Clean Air Strategy 2019 report says “Air quality is the largest environmental health risk in the UK. It shortens lives and contributes to chronic illness. Health can be affected both by short-term, high-pollution episodes and by long term exposure to lower levels of pollution. There are small things we can all do that will make a big difference to emissions locally and nationally.”
We believe scooting is a greener, healthier, quicker and fun way of getting around. It’s great for the planet and great for you.
The health benefits of scooting are vast:
Scooters are push powered. No fumes, no petrol, no nasty emissions
Scooting is great exercise. It helps with core conditioning and toning.
Scooting burns fat. Scooting is low-impact and low-intensity so your heart rate usually stays in the 60-70% of maximum range, which is where you burn some fat for fuel.
Scooting contributes to the government set target of 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week.
Scooting the school run removes pollution from the school gates. Research carried out across Europe has suggested that up to 30% of all new asthma cases in children are caused by exposure to air pollution.
HOW TO INCORPORATE SCOOTING INTO YOUR DAILY ROUTINE
If we know there are viable means to sustainably get from A-B (whether that’s scooting, walking or cycling) why do still so few of us incorporate these into our daily routines?
We believe the emphasis on tackling clean air needs to be in providing practical advice and solutions on how to travel in a more sustainable way.
It takes just 28 days to form a habit. We believe scooting can be a habit that’s formed easily and benefits both you and the environment.
- Did you know it takes the average person 20 minutes to walk a mile and less than 10 minutes to scoot it?
This means using a scooter for the school run or as a part of your journey to and from work can be done.
Have you considered the following?
- Parking further away from the school gates and scoot/walk/cycle the remainder of the distance
- Scoot to the train station rather than drive. This will save you a considerable amount on car parking charges, be great for you and your environment and may even mean you can catch an earlier train (or at the very least be first in the queue for a seat).
- Asking your school to create a clean air zone outside of the school gates
- Trialling a scoot to school one or two days a week
- Finding a friend who is going to the same destination as you and starting a car share
- Creating a scooter club at your school. Or a walking / scooting train?
- Ask your school or workplace to create an active/school travel plan. There’s lots of help and advice on how to do this on the Sustrans website.
- Take part in Living Streets’ WOW challenge. Children who walk, scoot or cycle to school regularly will be rewarded. Find out more here >>
