Which scooter to buy a 4 year old

  • 3 min read

Unsure whether to buy a Mini Micro or Maxi Micro scooter for your 4 year old?

If your child is at the top age bracket for the Mini, but seems a little young for the Maxi Micro you must be feeling a bit confused between the differences of the two kids scooters. This post provides a useful comparison to help you to understand whether a Mini and Maxi Micro scooter is the right scooter for your 4 year old. Our iconic 3 wheeled design comes in two sizes:
  • The Mini, ideal for 2-5 years
  • The Maxi, for 5-12 years
Here is the difference between the two. The smaller Mini Micro Scooter makes a perfect choice for pre-schoolers. We firmly believe a Mini Micro Deluxe scooter is a must for all children aged 2-5 years. It's lightweight frame, adjustable handlebar and strong rear brake make a Mini Micro Deluxe scooter safe and easy to use for even the youngest of children. The exquisite Swiss design and superior engineering means the Mini Micro is incredibly robust and therefore long lasting.

The larger Maxi Micro is a fantastic scooter for older children who are not yet ready for two wheels.

The Maxi Micro Deluxe takes the multi award winning, much revered children's three wheeled scooter to the next level and is the grown up version of the Mini. It has an increased rider weight limit, the iconic tilt and steer for children who are used to this way of scooting and 3 wheels to glide along pavements.

My child is too big for the Mini but small for the Maxi, what should I do?

Buying a scooter is an investment and we understand that as a parent you want to ensure your child has the most possible use from their scooter. Therefore we would recommend a move up to the larger Maxi Micro Deluxe scooter if your child:
  • is tall for their age
  • is close to or heavier than 35kgs / 5st 7lbs
  • is nearing their 5th birthday
The handlebar on the younger Mini Micro Deluxe scooter extends to a maximum of 68cm. Ideally handlebars should be used just above hip height. If you are unsure if your child is tall for their age, the measurements of the handlebar should give you a view on whether your child will be too tall for the scooter. Similarly, the weight limit on a Mini scooter is just over 5stone. If your 4 year old weighs above this or is approaching this weight, the older Maxi Micro will be a better option. Can a 4 year old use a Maxi Micro Deluxe scooter? micro_accessories_deep_shoot_69-of-79 The short answer is yes. A Maxi Micro is similar to a Mini Micro scooter in the following ways;
  • "lean and steer" steering style. A child leans their body in the direction they want to go.
  • 3 puncture and mark free wheels
  • adjustable handlebar (the Maxi Micro's extends from 67cm-93cm)
  • substantial rear brake for safety
  • strong and durable footplate
  • soft and durable grips for comfort and control
We would recommend a Maxi Micro Deluxe scooter for a 4 year old if the child:
  • will be able to manage the increased weight of a Maxi Micro Deluxe scooter (5.5lbs vs Mini Micro Deluxe's weight of 4.9lbs)
  • is substantially taller than the lowest setting of the scooter's handlebar (67cm)
  • will be able to or is already familiar with the lean and steer steering style
The Mini and Maxi scooters discussed are the Deluxe versions. Both models come in a classic version too. The following guides have been written to explain the differences.
