Did you know our Scooter Aid scheme is now nearly 2 years old? In that time YOU have donated your old Micro scooters which we repair, revamp and pass on to good causes in the UK and Africa.
This month some of your donated scooters took themselves off on a scooter adventure of a lifetime. This is the story of where YOUR donated scooters have ended up.
From West Mersea, Essex to Mulhaldi, India four scooters were repaired, revamped and are now ridden by 4 children who can enjoy playing.
Our first stop (post the airport) was to a children's orphanage in Calcutta called Nirmala Shushu Bhavan where Anna (the Micro Scooters co-founder) worked a while ago. It was set up by Mother Theresa over 30 years ago and has seen hundreds if not thousands of children come through their doors in that time. We left 4 scooters with the children at the orphanage and although it was not appropriate to take photographs we can assure you all the children were incredibly excited to get scooting!
The remaining four scooters went to a community (slum) called Mulahadi. We had a meeting with a company called Connexions who support this community by organising and teaching the women to do sewing so that once they have learnt to sew they can work from home. They constantly live under the threat of their community being bulldozed for a high rise apartment block to be put in its place. The community had about 10,000 people living in it and it was clean and orderly with up to 4 families living in each tiny house.
The children in the community took great pleasure in racing the scooters although it gave us even greater pleasure to watch them do so. The aim of Scooter Aid is to try in some small way, enable all children to have a chance to play. We can't thank you enough for taking the time to donate your scooters allowing this to happen. Thank you.
If you would like to donate a scooter to the Scooter Aid scheme you can do (free of charge) all the details you need are here.
You can find a list of good causes who have received a Scooter Aid donation here.
A final thanks to everyone who has donated. We will keep you updated with more Scooter Aid donations during the year.
Thank you and happy scooting
Anna & Philippa
