Q&A with Olly Huddlestone from @dadlifewithriver

How and why did you get into blogging?

I started my @dadlifewithriver Instagram account back in 2018 when I found out the amazing news that I was going to be a dad. I didn't know what I was doing, how much I was going to post or how I was going to use the account, but I thought the girls would enjoy having all of their memories to look back on in years to come.

Fast forward to 2022 and there are now three kids - River (3), Meadow (2) and Winter (1) - and I have almost 200k followers across TikTok and Instagram - crazy stuff!

What's the best thing about sharing your life on social? What's the worst?

I love being relatable to mums, dads and families alike. Social media is so often edited so you only see the perfect shots or the ideal lifestyle, but I like to try and post real life stuff and everyday things that parents can relate to - we all have our ups and downs, but one of my things is being able to laugh about them and talk about them openly. As parents, we're all just trying our best!

The worst has to be the trolls and keyboard warriors you get online. I'm not saying I get hundreds each day, but no matter what you do, you always get people trying to bring you down or tell you you're doing a bad job. The best thing is to block, delete, get on with your day and don't let it affect you.

What do you do to support your blogging?

I have a full-time job working in football and sports media based at Wembley, and I'm also a journalist. As well as my parenting social accounts, I also have my personal ones (@ollyhud) which are football-related. This means I spent a lot of time on social media creating content about the two things I love in life; my family and football.

There really aren't enough hours in the day to try and balance a full-time job, creating content for and managing my own social handles, plus trying to be the best dad I can be, but I'm managing so far - sort of! (big mention to my Mrs, Jodi, for being as supportive as ever!)

Tips for other people who want to do what you do?

I think the key is to find a niche that you enjoy and are interested in, and just go for it. Social media is so big these days and can be used for great things - it's amazing how much you can learn on TikTok, for example. So, whether you're into cooking, BMXing, building, or keeping fit, if you enjoy creating content around your niche then platforms like Instagram and TikTok are perfect to get your message out there and get noticed.

Things you love about your scooters?

I first got a Micro scooter back in 2001, when I was 10 years old - which only feels like yesterday! It's crazy now I've got three kids of my own that will grow up scooting with Micro. I'll be alongside, of course. This time I've got the bigger wheels, though!

For the kids, I love the range of colours and the accessories. The look on their faces when they opened up their scooters, helmets, bells and buckets was priceless! For myself, it's the ease of folding the scooters up and taking them wherever I want to go!
